Artificial grass

Artificial grass laid on a prepared, level base, usually beside a new driveway or in a garden that has just been cleared. A smaller part of what Eddie does, but the groundwork is the same job he does every day.

Artificial grass beside a gravel driveway

What laying artificial grass involves

Artificial grass is only as flat as the base under it. The ground is stripped, levelled and compacted, a stone base goes in, and the grass is laid and fixed at the edges. The same preparation Eddie does for a gravel driveway.

It suits a front garden beside a new driveway, a play area, or a patch where real grass never takes.

The ground under artificial grass has to drain, so a stone base and a sharp sand layer go in before the grass, and the edges are fixed so they do not lift. On a sloped site the base is graded first, the same as for a gravel driveway.

Eddie will tell you straight whether artificial grass suits the spot. A small, awkward patch beside a new driveway is the usual job; a whole lawn is a bigger piece of work and is priced on its own. Ask him when he quotes the driveway and he will price the grass with it.

How artificial grass goes down

The same ground preparation as a gravel driveway, with a finer layer on top.

  1. Strip and level

The ground is stripped and levelled, graded on a sloped site.

  2. Stone base

A compacted stone base so the ground drains.

  3. Sharp sand layer

A fine layer screeded level for the grass to sit on.

  4. Grass laid and fixed

Cut to shape and fixed at the edges so it does not lift.

What moves the price

No two driveways cost the same. These five things make most of the difference, and Eddie prices yours for free after a look.

  • Length and areaA long lane takes more stone, more tar and more time than a short drive. A bigger area usually works out better per metre, because the machinery comes out either way.
  • The baseIf the ground is sound and well compacted, the job is mostly surface work. If it has to be dug out and a new stone base built, that is the bigger part of the price.
  • AccessA lorry and roller that can drive straight in make a quicker job than a tight entrance or a run round the back.
  • The chip or stoneLocal stone is the plain option. A particular colour brought in from further away costs more.
  • DrainageWater has to go somewhere. If the falls are wrong or water sits at the gate, a channel or a soakaway may be needed.
