Gravel driveways
The lowest cost surface and a good one for yards, lanes and country driveways, as long as the base and the edging are done properly. Eddie lays gravel on a compacted base with kerbing to hold it in place.

What a gravel driveway involves
A gravel driveway is only as good as what is under it. Eddie strips the surface, lays and compacts a stone base and sets the edging or kerbing first, so the gravel stays where it is put and does not spread into the grass.
Then the gravel goes down and is levelled. There is a choice of stone, so the colour can suit the house, and a gravel surface can be topped up or raked over the years rather than replaced.
Gravel suits a long run where tarmacadam would cost a lot more, and it is the easiest surface to extend later. Where a car turns on the spot every day, gravel can shift, so Eddie will say if a sealed surface at the house end would serve you better.
- A compacted stone base, not gravel on soil
- Edging or kerbing to hold it
- A choice of stone

How a gravel driveway is built
Gravel on soil sinks and spreads. Gravel on a base lasts.
Strip the ground
The top layer comes off so the base sits on firm ground.
Base in and compacted
Crushed stone is laid, levelled and rolled.
Edging
Kerbs or edging hold the gravel where it is put.
Gravel laid and levelled
The stone you chose goes down and is raked level.

What moves the price
No two driveways cost the same. These five things make most of the difference, and Eddie prices yours for free after a look.
Get a free quote- Length and areaA long lane takes more stone, more tar and more time than a short drive. A bigger area usually works out better per metre, because the machinery comes out either way.
- The baseIf the ground is sound and well compacted, the job is mostly surface work. If it has to be dug out and a new stone base built, that is the bigger part of the price.
- AccessA lorry and roller that can drive straight in make a quicker job than a tight entrance or a run round the back.
- The chip or stoneLocal stone is the plain option. A particular colour brought in from further away costs more.
- DrainageWater has to go somewhere. If the falls are wrong or water sits at the gate, a channel or a soakaway may be needed.

Questions
Does gravel need a base?
Yes. Gravel laid straight on soil sinks and spreads. A compacted stone base and edging are what make it last.
Which stone can I choose?
Eddie will show you the options when he quotes. The choice depends on the house and what is available locally.
Is gravel good for a long lane?
Yes. It is the lowest cost way to surface a long lane, and tar and chip is the next step up if you want it sealed.
Which areas do you cover?
Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, south Tipperary and Laois, from our base in Mullinavat.
