Private roads and lanes
Long lanes, shared private roads and entrances, surfaced in tarmacadam, tar and chip or gravel. The right surface depends on the length, the traffic and the budget, and Eddie will tell you which.

Surfacing a lane
A lane is a long run, so the surface has to be priced by the metre and chosen to suit. Tar and chip is the usual answer for a long lane: sealed, good value and easy to re-dress later. Gravel is the lowest cost. Tarmacadam suits the entrance and the stretch nearest the house.
Whichever surface, the base and the drainage come first. Eddie grades the lane, sets the falls and any soft spots, compacts the stone and then lays the surface with his own lorry and roller.
- Tar and chip, gravel or tarmacadam, to suit the lane

How a lane is surfaced
Long runs are priced by the metre and the surface is chosen to suit.
Grade the lane
The lane is levelled, potholes and soft spots built up, and the falls set so it drains.
Base where it is needed
Stone goes in where the ground needs it, compacted.
The surface
Tar and chip for most lanes, gravel where the budget is tight, tarmacadam near the house.
Entrances and passing bays
Done in the same run, so the whole lane is one job.

What moves the price
No two driveways cost the same. These five things make most of the difference, and Eddie prices yours for free after a look.
Get a free quote- Length and areaA long lane takes more stone, more tar and more time than a short drive. A bigger area usually works out better per metre, because the machinery comes out either way.
- The baseIf the ground is sound and well compacted, the job is mostly surface work. If it has to be dug out and a new stone base built, that is the bigger part of the price.
- AccessA lorry and roller that can drive straight in make a quicker job than a tight entrance or a run round the back.
- The chip or stoneLocal stone is the plain option. A particular colour brought in from further away costs more.
- DrainageWater has to go somewhere. If the falls are wrong or water sits at the gate, a channel or a soakaway may be needed.

Questions
What is the best surface for a long lane?
Tar and chip for most: sealed, good value and it can be re-dressed. Gravel if the budget is tight, tarmacadam near the house.
Can you fix the potholes first?
Yes. The lane is graded and the soft spots and holes are built up before any surface goes on.
Do you do shared private roads?
Yes. A road shared by a few houses can be surfaced as one job.
Which areas do you cover?
Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, south Tipperary and Laois, from our base in Mullinavat.
