Groundworks and yard clearance
The work before the surface: clearing a yard, digging out the old driveway, levelling, stone in and compacted. Eddie does it with his own digger, so the same person sees the job through to the finished surface.

What the groundworks involve
Most driveways start with groundworks. The old surface or the topsoil comes out, the area is levelled and graded for the falls, the stone base goes in and is compacted. A yard full of rubbish or overgrowth is cleared the same way.
Because Eddie has his own digger and lorry, the groundworks and the surface are one job with one price.
The depth of dig depends on the ground and on what the surface will carry. A car driveway needs a shallower base than a farm yard that takes a tractor and a loaded trailer, and Eddie sets the depth for the job, not from a chart.

What moves the price
No two driveways cost the same. These five things make most of the difference, and Eddie prices yours for free after a look.
Get a free quote- Length and areaA long lane takes more stone, more tar and more time than a short drive. A bigger area usually works out better per metre, because the machinery comes out either way.
- The baseIf the ground is sound and well compacted, the job is mostly surface work. If it has to be dug out and a new stone base built, that is the bigger part of the price.
- AccessA lorry and roller that can drive straight in make a quicker job than a tight entrance or a run round the back.
- The chip or stoneLocal stone is the plain option. A particular colour brought in from further away costs more.
- DrainageWater has to go somewhere. If the falls are wrong or water sits at the gate, a channel or a soakaway may be needed.
